All Ireland U 19 Basketball Final 25 January 2011

Hard luck to the senior boys’ basketball team who lost out to Palmerstown Community College in the National Schools Cup C Final in the National Basketball Arena. Played in front of a large crowd of supporters from both schools this was a tense and exciting game from the off. Athenry raced into an early lead of 11-4 in the first quarter inspired by some fine rebounding and finishing from team-captain Eoghan Commins. Athenry continued to dominate under the boards with players like Commins, Thomas Flynn and Daniel Stephens winning everything but Palmerstown still managed to narrow the gap to 18-13 by half-time. After the break Palmerstown increased the tempo of their game and took the lead for the first time mid-way through this quarter, and from here the game developed into a race for the finish line. Good defensive work from Peter Dolan, Conor Henry and Padhraic Mac Maghnuis stopped Palmerstown in their tracks as they tried to build momentum. At this stage Palmerstown also defended for their lives so both teams started to shoot from distance. With four minutes left on the clock Daire Mac Maghnuis fired a great three pointer to send Athenry back into the lead. However almost immediately Palmerstown replied with a lay up to go ahead by one point. A few nervous minutes ensued until Palmerstown’s captain Seth Ceniza showed great composure and accuracy to score the final three pointer with merely seconds left on the clock. And as the clock wound down there was nothing more Athenry could do. Final score Palmerstown 34 - Athenry 30.

Overall it was a fantastic day for the school to see a Boys Basketball team play in a National Cup final for the first time ever. This team are also down to the last eight of the National League and we wish them all the best in their next game on February 13 th. In addition good luck to the U-16 Boys’ Basketball team who play in the All-Ireland Play-Offs in Athenry on Sunday February 6 th.
