The prestigious venue of Hickstead show grounds in Sussex in the south of England was the location of the recent all England interschool’s Show Jumping Championship. Students from Presentation College Athenry are the 2016 reigning all Ireland winners and therefore earned the privilege of competing as national title holders.
Phelim and Conan Mc Cann, Jack Neilan and J Naughton, all Junior Cycle students were a pole away from getting into a jump off situation. The riders were unlucky because of the different format in England of no discard score and all of the riders in the ring at the same time made them alter their plans a little. Although they are disappointed, nearly 60 teams took part and they were close to that jump off position of 10 teams. They will attempt to win the senior national league this year and need more riders to join the school team so that they can have a junior team competing also throughout the winter months.
The school would like to thank everyone who contributed to the school raffle. Thanks also to the equestrian community in Galway who offered prizes for a draw that was supported by riders and owners at local shows.
A big thanks to Jack, Conan, Phelim and J and their parents for representing the school with distinction throughout the year in competitions around Ireland and at Hickstead.
